2012 OCA Annual General Meeting

Joan O’Leary of Ajax was elected President of the OCA for the 2012-2013 season at the OCA AGM in Belleville on Sunday. Ian McGillis (Cardinal) and Dale Curtis (Brampton) will fill the two Vice President’s positions. Linda Lott (Kingston) joins the Board as Director of Women’s Competitions while Rob McKinlay (Morpeth) completed his term on the Board.

Highlights from the weekend meetings included:
  • Coaching certification requirements remain unchanged for the coming season with the exception being in the OCA Bantam Mixed and Junior Mixed events where coaches at the provincial level will have to have attained “Competition Coach Trained or Club Coach” status to be eligible to accompany a team.
  • Completed waivers will be necessary for anyone under the age of 18 wishing to compete in any event for the 2012-2013 season
  • A draw to the button will be used at all OCA event levels to determine last stone advantage for games
  • “Thinking Time” replaces the traditional method used
  • The men’s challenge round will be hosted by one club with two teams qualifying for the provincial event
  • No Competition Fee or CCA Affiliation Fee increases
  • The OCA had a financially successful year with revenues exceeding expenses by approx. $23,000
  • A silent auction in memory of OCA President Art Kavanaugh generated nearly $2,500 for the Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation
  • An OCA Honorary Life Membership was awarded to Jim Campbell (Russell) for his numerous contributions to the sport of curling in Ontario and at the national level
  • Linda Corcoran announced her retirement as the OCA Technical Co-ordinator after 25 years of contributions in a variety of roles and was recognized for her achievements by the OCA and CCA
At the National Curling Congress in Ottawa June 14-16, the CCA announced that the Curling Assistance Program (CAP) will be funded in the amount of $250,000 for the coming season. The CCA showed a profit of $227,000 for fiscal 2012. Beginning in the 2014-15 curling season, the Tim Hortons Brier will add a Team Canada to the field and the STOH will allow both the OCA and NOCA to qualify teams for the national event. Rule changes include implementation of “Thinking Time” allowing each team 40 minutes for a 10 end game. A national mixed doubles event will be in place for a two year period beginning in March of 2013. Event guidelines and format will be up for approval at an SGM later this year.
